Natural pearls typically form when a parasite burrows through a mollusk's shell and imbeds its self in the the mantle tissue. The mollusk's defensive reaction is surround the parasite with a substance known as a pearl sac. This interior of this sac is lined with nacre (Mother of Pearl) producing cells known as epithelial cells. These begin to keep depositing miniscule platelets of nacre (Mother of Pearl) around the intrusive particle. This continues and a pearl grows.
